What do you mean by Shaming Cultures?
Shaming Cultures refers to societies that use shame to uphold and maintain social order. For example, in many Asian cultures, the idea of "losing face" keeps people from straying from the status quo. This is relevant to Reimagine Ability because we recognize that when people are different in shaming cultures whether they choose to or not, often there are consequences such as isolation, exclusion, and ridicule. When a person comes from a shaming culture and also has different abilities, the person's story becomes more complex and intersectional. at Reimagine Ability, we want to explore these kinds of intersectionality and celebrate the ugly along with the magnificent.
Why Reimagine Ability?
Our community strives to reimagine in two ways. First, we want to reimagine what ability means, complicate it, redefine it. We strive to open our minds and hearts to see the ability and love in each person. Second, we want to reimagine the face of ability. We want all races and cultures to see differently abled people that come from their community and background. If you want the full story, click here.
